Ready or not, the holiday season is fast approaching. The holidays are the perfect time to get creative and add personality to your space — without breaking the bank or adding to the waste pile. With a little imagination (and a trip to your favorite thrift store), you can turn secondhand treasures into beautiful DIY holiday decor that feels both unique and meaningful. It’s the perfect time to get started with new creations in time to decorate!
Here are two simple upcycling projects to inspire your festive season.
🎁 Project 1: Framed Holiday Wall Art
What You’ll Need
Thrifted picture frames (any size or shape)
Holiday prints, vintage cards, or seasonal wrapping paper
Paint in your favorite winter shade (white, gold, evergreen, cranberry)
Paintbrush, glue, and ribbon
How To Make It
Remove the glass and back from your thrifted frame.
Give the frame a quick sanding if needed, then paint it in your chosen color. Let dry.
Cut your chosen print or fabric to size and place it inside the frame.
Reassemble and add a bow or piece of twine for a finishing touch.
💡 Tip: Mix frame sizes and styles for an eye-catching gallery wall full of holiday charm.
🕯️ Project 2: Upcycled Jar Centerpieces
What You’ll Need
Mason jars, bottles, or thrifted vases
Fairy lights, pinecones, dried oranges, or cinnamon sticks
Ribbon, lace, or burlap
Small sprigs of greenery
How To Make It
Wash and dry your jars thoroughly.
Layer the inside with pinecones, cinnamon sticks, or faux snow.
Add fairy lights or candles for a warm, glowing effect.
Tie ribbon or twine around the rim, and tuck in a sprig of greenery.
💡 Bonus: Use Epsom salt in the bottom for a “snowy” look!
